Day 1 - Arrive Wellington airport transfer to your accommodation

As New Zealand’s capital, Wellington is rich in political history. Explore Te Papa, a fascinating museum in New Zealand's capital. Head to Weta Workshop in the afternoon and begin your journey through the movie-magic world of Weta Workshop! learn about props, costumes and creatures created for your favourite films. Interact with cool stuff from our creative departments and catch an artist at work on our tour stage.

Day 2 - Wellington to Nelson

Catch a ferry to the South Island.

The passage across Cook Strait and through the Marlborough Sounds is one of the most scenic ferry trips in the world, along the way you'll see the Red Rocks seal colony, Tory Channel, Cook’s Lookout and the beautiful coves of the sounds. From Picton travel on to Nelson where you stay in the Boot Accommodation, offers you the ideal setting for unwinding from the hurly burly of life. One of New Zealand's sunniest towns and home to a fascinating community of winemakers, craft breweries and art lovers.  Explore the scenic reserves and forest glades between Blenheim and Nelson. Find tracks that lead to waterfalls and rock pools, or walk up along a ridge to a 417 metre peak.  This area is also home to some Middle‑earth™ magic. Peter Jackson chose Pelorus Bridge as a filming location for scenes from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Here, the dwarves were filmed floating in barrels down the river - an experience that Stephen Hunter, who played dwarf Bombur, called 'his favourite day on set'.

Day 3 - Wildlife encounters and Nelson Lakes National Park

For the ultimate wilderness and wildlife fix, visit Abel Tasman National Park. Here inviting golden sand beaches fill the spaces between tide line and native forest. Crystal clear streams tumble down mossy valleys to join the ocean, and friendly marine mammals are a permanent part of the scenery. From here, travel south to St Arnaud, a picturesque town that sits on the edge of Lake Rotoiti. St Arnaud is the perfect place from which to explore the honeydew forests and mountains of Nelson Lakes National Park. There's a number of stunning day hikes to choose from

Day 4 - Head to Punakaiki and Hokitika

There are plenty of places to stop along the way, visit Paparoa National Park, explore stunning limestone caves in Charleston, or take a walk to Punakaiki's bizarre pancake rocks and booming blowholes. Dating back 30 million years, these rock formations are created by layers of limestone overlaid with rock and clay.  From here make your way to Hokitika, a town famous for its pounamu (greenstone) jewellery and art works. Shop for pounamu locally or try your hand at carving a piece for yourself. Walk through Hokitika Gorge, enjoy this short walk along the stunning Hokitika Gorge and the pristine mature podocarp forest of the Hokitika Scenic Reserve. Head to Greymouth in the afternoon where you stay for the night. Greymouth is the largest town on the West Coast and known for its awesome seascapes. Popular activities here include local brewery tours, gold rush history at Shantytown Heritage Park and the spectacular West Coast Wilderness cycle trail.

Day 5 - Tranzalpine Train from Greymouth to Christchurch

Experience one of the world's greatest train journeys aboard and South Island’s striking natural landscape by taking a train between Greymouth to Christchurch. Along this journey you’ll see epic vistas, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, traverse the Southern Alps, and see miles of native beech forest. The TranzAlpine is one of the world's great train journeys covering 223 kilometres (139 miles) one-way, taking just under 5 hours. You’ll traverse the majestic Canterbury Plains, to the backdrop of the mighty Southern Alps - the journey of a lifetime.

Day 6 - Depart Christchurch
